Keeping Up With AWS re:Invent 2018

Ride the wave of new code in the AWS Cloud

Once again, AWS pushed the biggest conference in cloud to new heights. This year over 50,000 builders descended on Las Vegas for a jam packed week of learning, sharing, and fun.

Each year, this AWS re:Invent also brings an avalanche of new features, functionality, and services to the AWS Cloud. AWS ramps up release pace about a week before the show and it reaches a fever pitch during the week.

Here’s a look at release pace over the course of 2018:

And a drill down into the specific announcement made during (19-Nov — 30-Nov) the re:Invent time frame.

This year, there were 147 announcements made over the course of AWS re:Invent 2018. This includes the week leading up to the event. Here’s a complete list of all of the releases big enough to merit an announcement. Many more small updates are simply releases with no fanfare…only an update to the documentation.

Building Context

Honestly, this list is overwhelming. It’s also amazing. AWS has provided so many new tools that it takes a while to wrap your head around all of their new uses.

Think of it this way:

  1. We — the builders — just got a new LEGO catalog to explore
  2. Pick out a new set
  3. Build it
  4. Tear it down and figure out what else you can build with the pieces

Remember, this list is simply the new features, functions, and services. It doesn’t include the 2,000+ breakouts (over 3,000 with repeats) that explore new ideas about using the AWS Cloud!

Over the next few posts, I’ll be exploring some of the next functionality available — or soon to be available — in the AWS Cloud.
