There are a ton of different definitions for security, regardless if you call it “cybersecurity”, “digital security”, or “information security”. Most are useful. Some are not.
More problematic is how security is viewed by individuals and within organizations.
Understanding the role that security plays is critical. More and more of our world is impacted by actions taken online. Sadly – as it stands today – most people have it wrong. Security’s role in the digital world can be summed up simply…
Ensure that the technology you’re using does it’s job…and only it’s job.
That’s it.
Unfortunately, security has positioned itself as a gate keeper. As an roadblock within the organization. The team or technology that says NO.
That’s counterproductive. Security’s goals are the same as the business. Security is there to ensure that the business can continue safely in a challenging environment.
When you believe that the role of security is only to stop hackers and data breaches, you limit it’s effectiveness. You unintentionally build failure into your organization and your processes.
Security needs to be a part of the fabric of the work that everyone does. If we don’t adjust our view point here, we’ll continue to see massive breaches like Equifax more and more frequently.
